New Young Rotarians Club at Belmont Academy

Four of Belmont Academy’s senior pupils have worked with Ayr Rotary to form a new Club for young Rotarians – the Belmont Cluster Rotary Interact Club. Joint Presidents Sara Maskell and Matthew McColm, (middle) together with Secretary Julia Calliso and Treasurer Alex Maughan, got off to a flying start with a successful application to Ayr Rotary Club for a grant of £250. They’ll use that grant to make £15 loans to sixteen small enterprise start-up businesses in developing countries, as part of the ‘LendWithCare’ initiative of the poverty-fighting charity CARE International UK. The loans are each for a short fixed term, and, when repaid, will be lent out again to new small enterprise candidates to keep the virtuous circle of investment going.

Next month the Interact Club will work with VASA (Voluntary Action South Ayrshire) to organise Belmont Academy pupils in a drive to wrap gifts for the elderly, an activity which, when properly recorded, counts as ‘volunteering hours’ to boost participants’ university applications. Everybody wins!

Ayr Rotary is delighted to sponsor the new club, and looks forward to working closely with Belmont Academy Cluster Interact in all their future initiatives.
