New member Brian Hignett

Brian being welcomed by President Bob

Brian Hignett was recently inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Ayr. Brian is a retired veterinary surgeon, who spent most of his working life doing farm work in Devon. Brian was born in Kent, but his family moved to Glasgow when he was four years old, he went to school at Hillhead High School in Glasgow, from where he went to study Veterinary Medicine at Edinburgh University before working in Greenock for four years, then moving to Devon. He retired in 2009 and returned to live in Scotland in 2017.

Brian is married to Jane (a retired primary school teacher) who has recently joined Inner Wheel and they are celebrating their golden wedding later this year. They have a family of two, a daughter who lives in Lenzie and works as an ecologist, and a son who is an architect in London. Brian and Jane moved to Ayrshire to be between their daughter in Lenzie and Jane’s family in Wigtownshire.

Brian has been a keen sailor since the age of 16, he and Jane having owned several different boats over the years. Brian achieved the Yachtmaster Ocean qualification, but they sold their boat last year, having kept her in Troon Yacht Haven. She has been replaced with a motorhome! He also enjoys doing crosswords, curling and enjoys the occasional glass of wine (and whisky!). He and Jane are looking forward to exploring more of Scotland than is possible from the sea!

While in Devon, he was an active member of his local Round Table. He served in most of the posts including Chairman and Honorary President. When he was invited to join Ayr Rotary Club, this seemed an ideal opportunity of continuing to help the local community.
