Ken Ireland’s Career History

New member (Captain) Ken Ireland delivered an exciting and most interesting presentation on his seafaring experiences, He was born and raised in Glasgow, and after leaving school, joined the Merchant Navy in 1975.

During his career of over 44 years, he has worked for numerous shipping Companies, rising to the rank of Senior Master with P&O Ferries during the latter years. He served a four year apprenticeship concluding with examination for first certificate of competency as 2nd Officer. A minimum of 24 months sea time and 6 month college study concluding with examination for certificate of competency as 1st Officer. Finally, a minimum of 18 months sea time and 6 month college study concluding with examination for certificate of competency as Master.

His exploits took him to all continents, transporting everything from bananas to horses. In particular, he mentioned how peaceful and pleasant Somalia was before being overrun by unwelcome external forces. Even evading a powerful typhoon off Hong Kong, didn’t faze Ken or deter his love of the job.

In addition to Ken’s involvement with Rotary, he still pursues his interest in golf, cycling, curling, and a hobby in building radio-controlled model boats.
