Ayr win south-west region Curling
Playdowns at Hamilton Ice Rink 31 Jan 2016
A great performance saw Ayr win the Loudon 5 Trophy, and are through to the finals at Perth in March. The rink was Charlie Steele (skip), Alex Thomson, Geoff Barber and Ronnie Wilson. Everyone played pretty well throughout the 3 six-end games.
In the first we lost four single shots to Stranraer for the gain of 1, so going into last end with the hammer we were 4-1 down. Somehow we managed a 3 to gain a peel, which was crucial to the final placings.
We comfortably beat Ardrossan & Saltcoats, so effectively the last game was a shoot out between East Kilbride and ourselves. We played a confident game, never looking troubled and their skip Jack Blackwood shook hands after four ends.
Our success depends a lot on our strength in depth, so even with Jim and Neil having to pull out last week, we can still field a strong rink.
The winners of each of the four regions in Scotland, play for the Ram’s Head trophy (Scottish Champions), and the winner represents Scotland at the World Championships the following year.
