On a bright, perfect Friday morning on 13th May, at 10.30am on the sound of an air horn, eighteen teams teed off simultaneously, for the annual Rotary Club of Ayr charity golf event held at Belleisle, having fuelled themselves with bacon butties beforehand. A calm day, coupled with glimpses of the sun and a mild south westerly wind aided even the occasional players on the greens. Swinging, slicing, perfect putting, dramatic driving and the occasional mild swearing, were all in evidence as the teams returned to the new clubhouse for drinks and sandwiches, to await their positions in this keenly fought, but friendly match. Stories and anecdotes about “missing a sitter” or a “drive as straight as a die” were overheard being exchanged. Even an “I was rubbish today” was voiced more than once.

At 4.00 pm the clubhouse chatter evaporated into a silence and MC President Douglas Haddow, announced the winners. Long standing supporters of our charity golf day, Harold Cooper Builders from Bolton came first, winning a 4 ball over Royal Troon Golf Course and 4 golf sweaters from the Pro Shop in Belleisle. William Duncan & Co and Munro Partnership were second and third respectively. A prize draw was then administered by Michael Callan of TR Callan Auctioneers, the event’s sponsor. Delighted winners emerged from the crowd to claim their prizes, which comprised of excellent donations from local businesses. In excess of £8000 was raised and the main beneficiary of the day was Ayr Cancer Support.
