Visit to Troon RNLI

Troon RNLI lifeboat station’s Jim Redmond gave a warm bright welcome to a visiting group from Ayr Rotary Club in contrast to the overcast laden skies on the night.  In 2019, Jim took on the volunteer role of Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), amusingly referred to by the team as Lazy Old Man. Former firefighter Jim had been at the lifeboat station for over two years in the capacity of Deputy Launching Authority (DLA). As Lifeboat Operations Manager he has responsibility for managing all operational activities at the lifeboat station, as well as authorising the launch of the lifeboats working closely with the stations full time Coxswain Joe Millar and Mechanic Evan Gallagher.

The visitors were shown in detail the inshore lifeboat D-class called Sheena and then as part of the RNLI volunteers’ training on the evening, were enthralled by the practical launch of this robust vessel watched by a trio of seals in the harbour. A very generous Glasgow based lady called Sheena Farmer who had never been to Troon station, donated sufficient money in her will to purchase this inshore lifeboat. Then into the dressing room with its rows and rows of all weather expensive boots and weather gear. Unfortunately the larger All Weather Shannon Class was stationed farther up the coast.

Finally we were lead up to the meeting room past all the fascinating memorabilia adorning the walls, each telling of many awards, brave encounters and camaraderie of the highest order where Jim conducted a very informative question and answer session.

President Mary Helen give a worthy vote of thanks. And to top off the excellent visit, we adjourned to the Wee Hurrie for a delicious take away.
