It was the intention of the Rotary Club of Ayr Club to assist Secondary Schools within their Rotary area to be given the opportunity to have a School Honours Board for recording the achievement of their pupils/students who were awarded the Young Citizen of the Year. The Club chose a format which they knew had success in other areas in their District and sought to offer the concept to South Ayrshire Secondary Schools.

The main task was to chose a secondary school in the Ayr Rotary area and Carrick Academy was approached with Head Teacher Shona Stevens and Depute Head Johnnie Rusk showing tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to the proposal. The main points, which were agreed, covered the criteria used to select the winner, ensuring the ethos and curriculum were enhanced and was not based solely on academic success but also on positivity and strength of character. The winner did not have to be outstanding in sport or have any particular skill but someone who has given some exceptional effort in helping others or overcoming disadvantages in life. These considerations were under the control of Carrick Academy with all teaching staff voting.

Rotarians Alistair Tyre and John Ewing liaised with Heather Dunk, Principal, Ayrshire College, Michael Breen, Vice Principal( L &T), Cameron Bell Curriculum Manager, Construction Technology, Gavin Murray, Director STEM, Ian Wylie, & Eilidh Gerrish, Graphic Designer, Owen Kerr Signs, Ayr and Carrick Academy to produce the Honours Board. Grateful thanks to all involved. The cooperation between the parties involved was excellent and resulted in popular pupil Kayleigh Haggo being chosen, achieving the privilege of being the first name on the Board. Seventeen year old Kayleigh Haggo has a form of the condition which affects her balance and motor skills and she has to use a wheelchair. The winner does not have to be outstanding in sport or have any particular skill but someone who has given some exceptional effort in helping others or overcoming disadvantages in life Kayleigh’s already lengthy CV of success includes three golds in the European Paralympic Youth Games setting 13 world records and four national age group records in swimming, race running and club throw sports. She holds the Scottish short course record in the 100m breast stroke in 2014 and 2015. She is also the holder of the Scottish records in 2014 over the long course of 50 and 100m breast strokes and won a silver medalist in 2014 at the British Para-Swimming International meet. Kayeligh was also a Commonwealth Games baton bearer in 2014 and was named Ayrshire sportsability young athlete of the year at a charity ball that year, which followed up her win in the same category in 2012.Carrick Academy 1

It is intended that the Young Citizen award will continue in Carrick Academy while being offered to other schools in due course. The criteria and procedure for choosing the award winner will be formulated by the appropriate School authority. In the first instance, this is likely to be the Head Teacher and Rotary will only be involved as a matter of courtesy. The supply of the Honours Board and painting will be undertaken by the Rotary Club of Ayr.
