Alan Frew from RAF Airman to Commissioned Officer
At a recent Ayr Rotary meeting, Alan Frew delivered a presentation of his journey from ‘RAF Airman and Commissioned Officer to Manager of Air Traffic Control’.

As a local lad educated at Ardeer Primary and Auchenharvie Acadamy, Alan is a highly experienced aviation leader with over 26 years in the RAF undertaking senior air traffic command roles. He is currently the Senior Manager of Prestwick’s Air Traffic Control Centre, one of the UK’s most strategically important locations.
Alan’s slide presentation showed his various postings, many into conflict areas including the infamous Camp Bastion in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
As well as a period as a performance coach, one of Alan’s many deployments was to Brize Norton for 21/2 years which he recalled was one of the best and indeed worst times in the military. The latter because of overseeing repatriation of fallen service personnel to their family.
His work continues to shape Prestwick’s role in commercial aviation, military operations, and Scotland’s growing cargo sector.
