Tuesday 7th March John Duncan, Lord Lieutenant Scotland

At recent meeting the Ayr Rotary Club were given a thoroughly engrossing talk from the Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Mr John Lawrence Duncan. Following a distinguished career in the Police, he was appointed in 2006 by Her Majesty The Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, having previously served as a Deputy Lieutenant since 2001. At formal events and ceremonies the Lord-Lieutenant wears a military style uniform. The uniform is similar in style to an Army Dress uniform but is dark blue in colour with a silver sash, a cap, and a sword with a steel scabbard.

John was born in Buckie, Banffshire and educated locally. He joined Renfrew and Bute Constabulary and subsequently served in Strathclyde Police, retiring as Deputy Chief Constable. On retiral, he undertook a variety of consultancies, served as a Director and Chairman of Ayr United Football Club and had an active involvement with the Clerk Maxwell Cancer Research Fund and Columba 1400.

His arduous weekly schedule includes attending official occasions like the Commonwealth Day in Ayr, state visits, meetings with various charities, giving talks etc.

The Lord-Lieutenant is supported in his role by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants. John has been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen in the New Year Honours List in which he was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) for his personal service to the Queen.
